Help to understand av/sub/crossover required

Hi
Can anyone help
I have a onkyo 875 , a REL T3, and have just purchased 5 B&W M1 satellite
There are a number of settings I need to understand
The AV using audyssey mic says 80hz crossover and there is no option below 80 but increase to over 100
But the sub has a crossover dial from 30 - 120

I don't have a clue how to set this up
With the new M1's also as these are full band?

Can anyone set me a set of options that I can start at to make sense of the three perimeters

Also in sub terms is 30 lower sound than120

Apologies for the idiocy but if you don't aSk you don't learn

How do these interact

Novice question :)

Just ordered a svs PB-1000 to replace a xxls-400

I have an onkyo 808 and when I run audyssey it asks me to set the sub volume at 75 should I set it at 75 or louder

Also what's the best setting for my speakers (q accustics 1010 ) audyssey sets all my speaker at 60hz and 40hz for the center
Would it be better to set the, at 80hz so all the low stuff goes to my sub ?

This thread seems to have some members who know there stuff and hope you can point me in the right direction

Cheers

Hesitating between different sub models

Hi
I am trying to have a great 2.1 system. I have a marantz mcr603 and dynaudio 2/6 bookshelf speakers.
I would like to add a sub improving hifi and more important bass when watching movies.
I am debating between Acoustic energy neo v2, bk xls200, mordaunt short ms309, wharfdale diamond sw150 or spc10 as a subwoofer.
Would you have any view between these models, and ideally what would be best for my amp and speakers.
Thanks

I've been reading the Gecko thread in the Assured Advertiser's sub-forum and the main learning point that I've gleaned from Nigel's home cinema is that I should get the best out of the kit that I've got before contemplating upgrading.

This week's focus has been to stop every annoying rattle that appears whenever there's a bit of bass especially as I now listen at -8db rather than at -12db.

The last rattle was proving annoying and hard to pin down until I realised that it was coming from inside one of my subs. The subs are in cabinets so I had foolishly thought that it had to be the cabinets rattling.

I pulled the driver and found that one of the magnets on the back had fallen off (see pic attached). Has anybody had anything similar happen and any idea what could have caused it? I'm presuming heat.

I was able to stick the magnet back in place and used some duct tape to hold it in place until I find a permanent solution but the rattle remains and does so with or without the magnet in place. Voice coil?

As the sub is 13 years old and the manufacturer is no longer in business, is it a trip to the tip?

John

New Sub to compliment Kef T301's & T101's? SVS SB1000?

Hello sub experts!

I'm toying with the idea of looking for a new sub to go with my Kef T301's (fronts and centre) & 101's (rear) and could do with some advice please.

I currently have a silver Kef HTB2 from about 5-6 years ago when I bought the original 3005 package. Sold the eggs earlier this year, bought the T's and kept the old sub. I didn't bother with the full T205 package as I got a good deal on the sats alone and I was more than happy with my trusty HTB2, and I think frequency response was the same as the T2.

Theres's nothing really wrong with the set up I've got, I've just got a small dose of upgraditus and wondering if I'm missing out on a more compatible sub that would work better with the Kef T's.

The Kef's go from 80hz - 30khz and the manual recommends a crossover of 120hz on the amp. The HTB2 sub does 30hz to 250hz.

I read an old thread from 2011 from someone in a similar position (owned the T's, but didn't have the HTB2) and he got a lot of love for the BK XLS200 which isn't a bad price and seems to be good bang for buck (although the OP didn't go for it in the end). Conscious that was 2 years ago and there may be better models now?

would the XLS200 be much of an improvement over the HTB2?

I just wondered if there's anything else in that kind of price range that might be a marked improvement.

My room is pretty much square 4.5m x 4.5m with the stairs coming into the lounge.

Also, I should point out that my sub would sit on top of a heavy solid sideboard and close to a wall (see pic). Yes I know it should be on the floor, but space is a premium and I also have a 3 year old lad, so it's out of harms way up there. Any new sub would sit in its place (and the measurements of the XLS would fit just nice. The XLS400 would be too big).

A couple of other questions too:
My current sub is forward firing, and I know the XLS has both FF and DF models. Would there be a preferred type for my location? If it was DF should I sit it on a granite slab (with rubber isolators between the granite and the sideboard) to reduce vibrations? Or do I fire it into the room with a FF?

Also, with us watching movies mainly at night when child is in bed, a sub with a tighter, punchier base is probably going to be better than a rumbly flabby one (not that I'm saying the HTB is - like I say, I've always liked it, it's just that I've never really had anything to compare it to).

I'm happy to keep the current set up if J have to, unless you think I'm really missing out on something!

Thanks in advance,

Stu

EDIT: I should also add its mainly for movies

Can I make use of my 2x Subwoofer outputs...

With one SUB!?

Hi,

I have a Yamaha RX-A1010 and it has an RCA output for 2 Subwoofers (Subwoofer 1 & 2)

I was once told although not required the best option is to run two cables even though the signal is mono.

I would ask, is there any benefit at all? I have two RCA cables, two outputs but only one Subwoofer - the SVS SB12 NSD.

Many thank you's!

Hi all,

Currently using a Rel StormIII and really impressed with the BIG deep bass. My question is do I really need to purchase the addition of a Neutrik Speakon lead or is it a waste of money?

Kind Regards,
Atak.

Would I have any issues.....

Hi all, I've just purchased a Wharfedale Diamond SW150 and have it connected to my TV set-up (rotel Ra-04) via the speaker level inputs, very happy with it so far.

Would I run into any problems running a separate pair of cables from my hifi set-up (marantz PM6003) which in the same room so that the sub could be used with either set-up. Also if so, if I accidentally ran both amps through the sub momentarily would it likely do any damage?
Any help or knowledge would be great thanks.

Upgrade from Mordaunt Short 309i - SVS/BK advice please. (With a focus of Movies)

Edit: My current sub:
http://avland.co.uk/ms/ms309i/ms309i.htm

Ok, so I'm currently tinkering with my speakers and wondering what to upgrade.

Say I have a budget of £500.

My subwoofer's I have used so far are a Gale Storm (I know, I know), and my current one which I love, which is a Mordaunt Short 309i. Damn could I tell the difference when I upgraded from the Gale.

My surround setup consists of:
Yamaha RX V765 - Love yamahas, I'm keeping this.
mission 772 speakers
mission 77c center speaker
mordaunt short msb20 rear speakers
mordaunt short 309i

I was/am/ish going to see if it would be an idea to upgrade my speakers, and at the moment am tinkering with the settings with my trusty radioshack analog spl meter and changing the placement. All discussed in my thread here:
http://www.avforums.com/forums/speak...us-movies.html

However, I have had the guys over at AVS look for 'weak points' in my setup and it seems to come down to the 309i, as it's only got a frequency range down to 35.
Of course with movies as my primary use, numbers lower than that are going to make me hear more of what should be hearing at low lfe levels.

My room size is approx 18x13ft, I have the missions across the front sound stage (center is in the middle designated spot in my custom build cabinet - Still standing after about 5 years I might add :smashin:) and the sub (behind the cat house under the projector) with msb20's on the rear wall either side of the room.

Some pictures (just a quick couple shots, dont mind them) so you can see what I mean:

Front

Back

.... Yes our two cats are in there, excuse them lazing about.

Now, a few years back I remember most of the AVF lot here were raving about the SVS sub range, so I had a look for the posts about their range and found that a lot of you have now gone on to the BK range.

I was recommended over on AVS the SVS PB1000 Subwoofer, which is at a price point I like at £425.
The only place I could find it was here:
Sub Woofers Svs PB1000 | hifix.co.uk
I also noticed they had an SVS SB1000:
Sub Woofers Svs SB1000 | hifix.co.uk
That is the only place online based in the uk that I can find that stocks SVS subs.

I have no idea what the difference is between them, but the SB1000 isn't ported, it's a sealed box, so I am presuming that the PB1000 that is ported would be better due to better airflow?
(or something along those lines)

As for BK, all I could find was their own website which has the one that everyone seems to like, the BK Monolith:
Monolith
No where else that I can find sells BK subs.

The BK states that it go's down to 15hz/20hz and the SVS down to 19hz.

They both appear to be the best on the market at the price range, and possibly evenly matched so I have two questions, for the time being:

I am going to presume both would be a big noticeable difference to the 309i

1. Would it be more beneficial to me to upgrade the sub as opposed to the rest of my speakers which I can tweak?

2. Which would you go for out of the SVS PB1000 and the BK Monolith and why?

Cheers

New to forum. Looking to get my first subwoofer. Would mainly be used for HT and a little music. Room size is about 14x16 and opens up to kitchen area.

I have been looking for a bit, getting to learn about subs. I am by no means an audiofile. Anything I add to my system will be an improvement over what I currently have.

Working with budget wife has given me, not much. Under 200.
Considering the following:
Lava lsp08 (maybe lsp10) new
Velodyne vrp1000 (used but in good condition)

Any thoughts or considerations greatly appreciated.

Many thanks.

Hi all,

Am I right in thinking that the target for a flat response +/- 5db or better still (but a lot harder to achieve) +/- 3db, could somebody please confirm that this is right ?? Also should this reading be taken before or after any octave smoothing ??

Many thanks in advance,
Gary

Replacing my B&W ASW608

Decided it's time for a new sub.

I currently have the B&W ASW608 that came with my MT50 speaker package and Onkyo 818 amp.

Would the PV1D be much of an upgrade or should I look further afield?

Ideally, size wise, I don't want much bigger than the ASW608. Is that achievable?

Any suggestions for an upgrade? Would also like it to be in white to match my M1 speakers which I don't intend on replacing.

Thanks.

Cambridge Audio AERO 9 -Vs- BK XXLS400

Good evening,

I ask your forgiveness in advance knowing the deep feelings regarding offerings from BK Electronics. I notice the 'bar' for 'bang for buck' has been set time and time again by BK and to my knowledge until recently never questioned.

I see some smaller offerings from SVS and all good too however I wish to buy 'Made In Britain'. This sentimental and patriotic approach to purchasing has obvious limitations as to choice on a budget.

Yet now this past week it seems the Gingerling @ Richer Sounds has finally got to grips with consumer demand. A new subwoofer entry has got me most curious. Enter the 'Cambridge Audio AERO 9'. I see some promising statistics / specifications and wonder if you guys have experienced this new offering at all?

The numbers to me at least suggest this new Cambridge Audio offering may just bellow a bit deeper than the XXLS400 and have possible a tad more SPL.

The BK -3db lower than 20Hz with 400watts , 12" woofer sealed cabinet. -Vs-

Cambridge Audio 21Hz listed with 500watts, 10" woofer + 10" ABR

Any opinions would be most welcome, I am hoping to move to a larger flat soon so will have room for a few new toys.

Thanks

Help on my system/sub

Hi,

I am looking for some advice and suggestion.
Basically there is a deficiency in my system where the gunshot and explosion scene is comparatively sound lower to dialogue or crash or other scene.
Any idea if adding sub will help to improve? Which frequency response that i need to look at for gunshot/machine gun scene?

Thanks a heap.

What size REL subwoofer to get?

Hi

I may be intrested in buying a REL sub for my Hi-Fi, just to reinforce the low end of my CM5 speakers. I do like the design of the REL subs so I guess that's why I suggested so. I'd want it to be gloss black and as small as possible really.

My room measures 4.78m wide x 3.33m long x 2.73m high.

I have no idea what size sub I need / how many watts, to be honest I'm not even sure if my CM5 speakers are the best for my room, but I reckon they are great. Ideally I'd like the REL T-Zero but I doubt it would be the right choice for my room.

Looking at the specs of the CM5 speaker, it has -6db at 45hz and the frequency response (I'm assuming at 0db?) is from 52hz. I am looking to have frequency response from the sub from at least a good 30hz if not lower. I read the REL does 38hz at -6db. Does that mean its no good to me? I'm not too sure on whats with the frequency responses at -6dbs etc are..

I've had a few sub

Hope to get some help in choosing the right driver sized sub/right powered sub for my room.

Thanks.

EDIT: I could have sworn I posted it in the subwoofer section :S

Logical upgrade from Monolith DF

As per the title.

I have 3 x MA Apex 40s as my LCR, with KEF T301 as surrounds (thinking of two more A40s as a replacement or maybe Shadows from MA)

Movies are 90% of what we listen to, is there a next step up from the Monolith that is not silly money (say £750) that would give significant returns in terms of speed and agility yet maintain the depth and grunt of the Monolith?

I must add that I do like the current set up but I am thinking of a new amp (my current unit is 6 years old) and possibly a new sub if the gains are there.

Thanks

How low can you go?

$

I bought an BK XLS200 because of size issues with the Monolith. As it stands the gain is set to less than half and I get good bass.

As an upgrade route I'm half considering getting a second one and that would certainly fit better in my lounge over the monolith which is gargantuan. However it niggles me when I read how low the Monolith can supposedly go. It's as if something might be missing from the XLS200. Yet when you read the crude specs they don't look worlds apart

Monolith plus
Frequency Response at -3dB: 20Hz / In Room at 15Hz

XLS200
Frequency Response at -6dB: 17Hz

So are you really missing much other than higher volume?

Or should the XLS200 be in the classifieds and me just biting the size bullet and getting a monolith? I don't really want to do that.

Just for context I plan to replace my two front A10s with RX6, RX8 or two more A40s shortly as well. Just can't decide and only really interested in movies.
