5.1 System Sub Placement - 150 Hz Directionality

Hi,

I need help with placing a sub in a 5.1 surround system.
I don't have the speakers yet so can't test it. Also, I'm decorating and need to channel the speaker wires etc into the walls which I need to do ASAP and I need to decide where to put the sub before doing so, hence my question here.

Anyway, I'm going to get the Jamo A 102 HCS 6 5.1 system. The satellite speakers have a response of 150 to 20000 Hz, so the sub will have to go up to at least 150 Hz.

My concern is as this frequency the sub will be somewhat 'directional', but I'm only going off what I have read on various forums.

I can place the sub either in the front corner of the room to the right of the front 3 satellite speakers, or in the rear corner of the room, directly to the right of the sofa where we'll be sitting. I can't place it anywhere else unfortunately.

I'd prefer to have it in the rear position, but at 150 Hz would it be particularly noticeable that the sound is coming from the right?

I'm not going to have the sub running very loudly since I don't want to annoy the neighbours. I'm not sure if this would make any difference.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

I had and returned both the XSL200 and XXLS400.

Both excellent Subwoofers, very natural sounding and build quality is excellent. What I loved about these subs was how they really did play the notes, not smack them out with a bang.

BK themselves treated me well.

For anybody with any doubts, give them a go.

They were not fast with the refund but gave me no trouble.

All in all a fine experience.

Thanks BK.

B&W ASW675 Died

My sub seems to have died. I wondered why the film I was watching had an odd sounding sound track!!

The fuse is intact, and the signal detection part seems to work okay, but there is no sound coming out of the device so I suspect the amp has died.

Is it worth trying to repair? Any tips?

subwoofer,which is the volume/cross over

I have checked YAMAHAs set up guide which says before setting up the YPAO (speaker setting within the room),I should set the subwoofer volume to half way and the cross over to max.I have a RICHTER THOR MK4 active subwoofer which has GAIN and a FREQ contols, and a phase which I set to NOR(REV-NOR).Which ones the volume and the cross over,DOH.:lease:Please have some pity on this dumb sole.

Is it my sub or av reciever thats the problem?

As the title says I am having a problem with my sub an xls200 mkII and my denon 2312.(owned both for a year and worked fine until then) The sub seems to work "ok" for a while but then it will just make a long really loud kinda ripping/vibrating noise which stops and starts but the sub is not actually producing any bass. After this has happens the sub buzz's loudly, sounds like from the amp on it. If i turn it off turn it on again it will work for a little while and do the same thing.

I contacted bk electrics and i explained the problem. Guy did a couple of basic tests over the phone and said the subs working, maybe its the reciever or the lead. I replaced the lead today and it makes no difference.

Anyone care to guess what it is? I am inclined to blame the sub obviously but could it be the 2312? Any help is appreciated before I try and send it back for repair.

Cheers tony

I have just upgraded from a bowers & Wilkins 600 series system to 3 MP150 & M4T mksound.

What sub would be a good match?

My room size is 4m x 5m.
Ceiling height is 2.3m.

I would Like something in a small cabinet as space is at at premium.

The x8 is about the biggest I can get away with.

Thanks in advance.

Sub/subs EQ discussion thread

I thought it may be an idea to start this thread as there has been a few posts regarding Audyssey and REW in other threads taking them off topic.

I've just started dabbling with REW and would like some advice on my first few measurements.

I also thought it would be good if others could post their graphs to compare and discuss which would hopefully make things a little easier to understand.

Here are mine

The yellow and green are the main subs at the front. Yellow with audyssey, green without. The purple and blue are with a third small sub directly behind and a metre to the left of mlp. The purple is with audyssey.

To me it looks better with the two main subs but i've had a brief listen to Oblivion and adding the third sounds better so far.

SB12 NSD to SB13 Ultra - just louder?

$

Hi,

I currently have an SB12 NSD which has ample volume, I never need it much past the 10 o'clock gain.

Also it's a pretty lovely sounding SUB for movies, however, as many of you will understand, the more you hear good stuff, the more you wonder what the next one up would sound like LOL

So I have this simple question, as the SB13 Ultra is a very respected SUB, may I ask, would I be getting simply more volume than the SB12 NSD? or would I be getting more than that? and if so, WHAT!? a better music/movie experience? bearing in mind, the SB12 NSD is LOUD ENOUGH - I am a sound quality guy, who likes accurate sound representation and good separation, and control.

Much thanks for any advice.

speakers gone mad

Hi guys i badly need help on my speaker system.

i have been using it for a year now and did not have any problems until recently.
i noticed that my speakers (sub-woofer in particular) has been acting crazy. every time i power the speakers on i hear this annoying crackling sound then followed by a significant movement of the sub back and fourth without emitting any sound.

i tried all input modes on the system but regardless, it doesn't make any difference still does the same thing. I also tried toning down the volume to the lowest possible input but still does it the sub still goes back and fourth without any sound but static. unfortunately, the warranty of the equipment is only good for a year :suicide:

I badly need help on this and would greatly appreciate on any suggestion that you have for me to have this fixed..thanks in advance

Subwoofer up to £300......need some ideas.

Hello All

I've recently purchased 4 x Kef KHT3005SE and 1 x KHC3005SE speakers. Together, I'm driving them with a new Denon AVR-X1000 amp.

I'm in search of a subwoofer costing no more than £300. I'm not looking to disturb the neighbors upstairs and the sub is to be placed behind the sofa so I don't need a so powerful one. Room dimensions must be I believe 3.5 x 5/6m.

I was looking at the BK XLS200 and wanted to know of any equivalents I should be looking at in terms of size and performance.

Cheers!

Hi There

In short, my xls300 is silver and Mrs wants a different colour.

xxls400 is on my list as BK are very wife friendly offering lots of colour options, but is it going to be much if an upgrade

Kit list will be (ignore my Sig) Monitor Audio Apex L/R/C + Onkyo 818

If its not really a leap Ill just tell her we're sticking with what we have :)

Anyone got a Yamaha YSTFSW150 low profile sub

Hi, I am after a low profile sub as I haven't got much room for it.

I have seen this yamaha sub that seems perfect as it is smaller than my receiver and will fit in a tv stand.

Yamaha YSTFSW150 Black | Subwoofer | Richer Sounds

But I Haven't found any reviews for it so thought I would ask if anyone on here has got one or heard one and could tell me what they thought of it.

It would be used with a Denon avr 1910 and Wharfedale diamond 10.1 front speakers for movies/tv.

Or if anyone knows of any other small subs for similar price that they could recommend it would be appreciated.

Thanks.

When the sub has 'sub-sided'......

Last night I returned from work and eventually sat down to watch some TV, and after a brief time thought it all sounded a bit 'thin'.
So, knowing my sub has an over eager 'auto on/off' relay, I turned it up to get it to kick in, but it simply wouldn't kick in.
Anyway, after some investigating it became apparent that it was.........dead!

So, luckily it is in warranty and I can get it fixed, but it has left me sub-free for at least a week! :thumbsdow

Even with the settings tweaked to maximise the low end out of my B&W's, it seems to have left a whole in my life! How am I to cope with no real sub? I feel like I'm going through withdrawal symptoms! :suicide:

Any advice on how to cope....??

New amp

Hi my mission e8as2 has a dead amp and unfortunately mission no longer stock spares. I'd love to repair it but how? Are plate amps available elsewhere that would fit or how could I rig it to use an off board amp? Love the sound so really hoping for options.

Home theatre subwoofer help, dual 12"

Hi, i'm building a dual 12" subwoofer in a swdc12 enclosure. Im debating on which drivers would perform the best? Maybe the Fi Q? TC sounds epic?

As for the amp, I guess the ep4000 would be sufficient?

Any other recommendations?

For your reference, I've started from this thread:

BL XLS300 Buzzing ....

But only when set to LFE (i.e. internal crossover bypassed)

So if I were to switch it back to norm (not bypassed) and set the sub to 120 Hz (Max on the Sub), leave the Cross over set to to 80Hz on the Amp will there realistically be any difference to using the bypass function?

If there will be no difference its a nice easy way for me to eliminate the buzz :)

How much for Significant Sub Upgrade?

I'm considering a sub upgrade and was wondering what the cost of a significant upgrade from my current mk v-1250 would be? My room is 4 x 5m, my speakers are mk 7's front and centre and mk xenon 36's rear. Open to any suggestions inc diy, second hand, no restriction on size. Thanks.

Some advice needed on SB13 Ultra VOLUME control.

Hi,

If anybody who has one could chime in I would really appreciate it, or at least is familiar with one.

I am having a really hard time understanding WHY I need the volume on the IFC knob so high.

I have googled and googled and done as much reading as I can but I am not grasping it.

The volume on this SUB to level match my speakers, I need on -12db, this confuses the hell out of me as I am in a small room, and only needed the 10-11 o/c position on my SB12 NSD but this digital readout and db stuff I am honestly not grasping I mean this SUB is way way more powerful but I honestly DON'T GET IT - WHY am I needing the volume set so high?

Sorry I know somebody here understand why, please try and explain LOL cheers.

notable previous subs are Dali E-12 F, XXLS400, and SB12 NSD all of then needed around the 10-11 o/c position on the volume/gain knob, but there is no position on this IFC knob it just controls the digital readout the same as an AV Receiver you know? like for example, -28db, so it's hard to compare with previous SUBS with traditional knobs but even so I would have thought i needed the volume set much lower on this very powerful SB13 Ultra SUB
